Understandings

Consider the following statements:
  • A good leader considers the will of the people.
  • To maintain control, you must have power.
  • Standing up to oppression takes great individual courage.
In view of what we have learned in our unit on the Middle Ages, choose one of the above statements and justify it through examples from our unit and if possible with examples from modern day society.

I justify " Standing up to oppression takes great individual courage" because it really does take courage because the consequences can be great and harmful. One good modern day example would be the Tiananmen Square Massacre where before the massacre began a man puts up his hand in front of a tank to show that the chaos had to stop this is just like Thomas Baker in the Middle Ages standing up and disagreeing to the statute and to the wages in the Middle Ages. It obviously takes great courage because you don't have anybody supporting you at the time if an individual does it alone.Standing up takes a lot of courage mainly because the government or ruler usually intimidates you because of what they could do to a single rebel. It takes more courage for a single man or women to stand up to the oppression instead of a whole group of people standing up because a group can intimidate a government/ruler but an individual shows great courage and is shown like a brave act of a hero.

1066: Who Had The Best Claim?

The year 1066 was the year of King Edward of England's death. After this 3 all very brave men had claim's to the throne. One was the strong Duke William of Normandy, then was Harald Hardrada his ancestor was King at some point and he now claim's the throne, then the most probable leader Harold Godwinson the Earl of Wessex Harold was the most powerful English noble. Who had the best claim? Harold Godwinson I would say would have the best claim. I think Harold had the best claim because he was a English men just like all the other people in England also he is a strong leader because he was the leader of the army and the Earl of Wessex. But it was a strong competition for the throne of England, Harald Hardrada was the King of Norway and even with that he wasn't happy with just being King of Norway he wanted England, his ancestor so called "King Cnut" who was once King of England and the help of Tostig (Harold Godwinson's brother) he had no realistic reasonable reason he should have the throne at the time. Also even if the pope is rooting for Duke William of Normandy it doesn't mean the pope is always right but this made a lot of people more aware of Duke William. The most reasonable and probable King should be Harold Godwinson with all his talents and experience also with him not being a foreigner he would be the perfect King of England.

The Feudal System Explanation

"Father Francois, you are my honored guest. Please allow me to explain the feudal system to you before you ask any questions of me. I am but a simple farmer."
The King is on top. He needs soldiers to fight  so he tells his vassals, if they get knights for him he will give land. His vassals make a deal with knights and in exchange for fighting , he will give them land. The knights make deals with peasants that if they do jobs for him, he will give land. In the end the King owns all the land.

Values & Choices

Once I witnesses a student from my class being peer pressured because 2 students wanted to be his partners and they were using the "Best friend" line which made me think that he was really being peer pressured
I responded with nothing. I didn't do anything I just witnessed it.
I wished I would of said something to get the student out of peer pressure or made some type of action which would at least try to make him make his mind or show that he is being peer pressured to show the other students he was being peer pressured because that would of helped that student at that time.
What kept me to not respond? I'm not so sure I think I might not of been so confident to respond the way I liked but I felt that something was stopping me but I'm never so sure why, but i intend to eventually overtime figure out.

In many of the texts i read in class one good example of a bad thing happening would be Germany and he jews. This shows exclusion because german first started with exclusion then discrimination leading up to Geonocide. This all started with Hitler some reason he disliked the jews and, he became to power and that was when the exclusion began for the jews.

1.What’s familiar about the incident Eve describes?
A very familiar thing that Eve describes is the bulling. She said that people would pick on people who are "different" like they read too much and other similar activities, that would be the reason why people pick on them, but it's not a bad thing to read too much or similar things.

2.What surprised you?
That Eve says that a group of people would spend their whole time harassing other people and that was what they spent their time on which I found very bad because, for their own entertainment they would just bully other kids.

3. How does Eve’s story relate to bullying? Was she bullied? Did she bully? How would you explain her behavior?( perpetrator/bystander/victim?). make sure you justify( back up your answer.
Eve's story relates to bullying because she had spoke about different scenes of a bullying. But sadly enough Eve was one of the people who bullied other people, I would call her a perpetrator for doing that because it is not right to bully other people for your own satisfaction, but only now she realizes the right choice of not bullying.

4.How did Eve’s need to belong affect the way she responded when another girl was being mocked? Why does her response still trouble her? How do you like to think you would have responded to the incident?
She was still a bully at the time and she continued mocking. Eve's response still troubles her because now when she's older she realizes also Eve's says "looking back i wonder how I could of participated in mocking that girl, when i knew perfectly well to be mocked myself". I wish I would of responded atleast in a positive way or I should of said something

5. Eve concludes “Often being accepted by others is far more satisfying than being accepted by oneself, though the satisfaction does not last.’ What does she mean?
This means that you feel better if other people like instead of just you liking yourself or actions. So you feel like you like people liking you instead of just you accepting your action really good.

Le Chambon

1. What did you learn from the stories of rescuers?
I learned various things from the stories of the rescuers. One example would be that courage should never be forgotten and the rescuers said this because courage takes more than just guts you really need to believe in what you do to have courage. Another example would be that If nothing was done to stop the bad, all humanity would be in chaos.

2. What do they teach us about human behavior?
They taught us that some people just need a leader to agree with what they really feel about a situation which is normally a bad thing in most occasions.

The Poem

The poem I chose was Victory. The part that stood out for me was the part it said my " Father (once big and strong) which for me probably means that the Germans beat up the jews and her father was now weak. It was very sentimental because it was just the slightest bit happy when the poem said they danced. A connection that I could make would be probably that once I wanted to spend time with my dad by ourselves or, ( he wanted to spend time with me). That would be the closest way I can connect to the poem " Victory". Overall I thought the poem was very interesting and somewhat touching, it is a great poem and the mood is sad but slightly happy. I specifically chose "Victory" because it had the nicest least saddest mood I thought which I liked.

Germany 1918-1933

In Germany during this time Germany was in an economical crisis but an opportunity for Hitler.
The markets crash was a great way opportunity for Hitler because he would try to reach out and say the Nazi party would make Germany better. There were more crashes in Germany such as the Hyperinflation a good way to show what he could do to Germany and show it would be a better place, adding his powerful speeches Hitler was a strong person leader for he Nazi party. Also another event would be the Reichstag Fire, Hitler used the fire as a way to blame the communist and the other parties, With all these events Hitler had promised for a better future in Germany and he used th Reeichstag Fire as an opportuniy to show how the other parties were "Trying to ruin the Germans Government". Then overall plus his powerful speeches Hitler was a man to look forward to. The Treaty Of Versailles was another way for him to gain power. He used the Treaty as a way to make peoples hatred of it to show that he should be in power. Luck was part of Hitlers path to power.

Rules in Germany

1. Who could now be defined as a "Jew"?
The people in Germany who had 3 or 4 Grandparents who were Jew were considered Jews even if the person did not agree with himself being Jew, It was the German law.

2. What was meant by "Aryanizing" Jewish Businesses?
What the Germans mean by Aryanizing Jewish Businesses, would mean that Jewish workers and managers were forced by Germans to quit their job, the new host of Jewish businesses were hosted by non-Jewish Germans and there were fixed prices in the Jewish businesses.

3. How were Jews who were professional ( lawyers, doctors etc.) restricted?
The Jews who were professionals at good jobs were restricted rather not to study their job any more, and not being able to apply their job to non-Jewish Germans.
For Example: Jewish doctors were not able to help non-Jewish Germans

4. What did Jewish identity cards need to include now?
The Jewish identification cards needed to include a large red "J" on their card to show that they are Jewish..

5. What was the " Law for the protection of Hereditary Health of German People" ( sum up in your own words)?
The " Law for the protection of Hereditary Health of German People" was the requirement for all German married couples to receive a certificate from the public health authorities. Which was a certificate of fitness to marry. People with contagious sicknesses were not legible for these certificates.

Targeting the communists and other political parties

1.Civil Rights are things that keep life less corrupted and allow you to have privacy, safety and rights to own items. Civil Rights are very useful to have a stable life in a country otherwise there would be a lot of struggles and protest. One example of Civil Rights would being able to own property and have privacy.

2. Some good things that were useful to people would be the Nazi party providing financial and social aid to people. Also the Nazi Party were good environmentalists which of course would be good for everybody. But overall the Nazi's said that they would help people who were in need of help and maybe fund a bit for the people who were struggling in Germany.
