Understandings

Consider the following statements:
  • A good leader considers the will of the people.
  • To maintain control, you must have power.
  • Standing up to oppression takes great individual courage.
In view of what we have learned in our unit on the Middle Ages, choose one of the above statements and justify it through examples from our unit and if possible with examples from modern day society.

I justify " Standing up to oppression takes great individual courage" because it really does take courage because the consequences can be great and harmful. One good modern day example would be the Tiananmen Square Massacre where before the massacre began a man puts up his hand in front of a tank to show that the chaos had to stop this is just like Thomas Baker in the Middle Ages standing up and disagreeing to the statute and to the wages in the Middle Ages. It obviously takes great courage because you don't have anybody supporting you at the time if an individual does it alone.Standing up takes a lot of courage mainly because the government or ruler usually intimidates you because of what they could do to a single rebel. It takes more courage for a single man or women to stand up to the oppression instead of a whole group of people standing up because a group can intimidate a government/ruler but an individual shows great courage and is shown like a brave act of a hero.
